What Are Progressive Lenses?

Progressive lenses are multifocal lenses in which the power changes gradually from the top of the lens (for distance) through the middle (for arm's-length viewing such as a computer) to the bottom (for reading). Unlike bifocals, there is no visible line, so the lens looks like an ordinary single-vision lens.

They are commonly prescribed for people who need help with both distance and near vision. Most wearers need a short period to get used to moving their eyes through the different parts of the lens.

How It Works

The power of a progressive lens changes gradually from top to bottom, so you look through the part of the lens that suits the distance you are viewing.

  1. Look up for distance

The upper part of the lens is set for seeing far away.

  2. Look ahead for in-between

The middle area supports arm's-length tasks like a computer screen.

  3. Look down to read

The lower part of the lens is set for reading and close-up detail.
