Bifocal Lenses
Two prescriptions in one lens: the main area for distance and a distinct lower section for reading.
Two zones
Distance and near in one lens
Defined reading area
Reading section sits in a fixed place
One pair
No swapping between glasses

What Are Bifocal Lenses?
Bifocal lenses combine two different prescriptions in a single lens. The larger upper part is for distance, and a smaller segment in the lower part is for reading and other close-up tasks. The edge of the reading segment is usually visible as a line.
Because there are only two zones, the change between them is sudden rather than gradual, and arm's-length distances (such as a computer screen) are not specifically corrected. Bifocals are commonly prescribed for people who need both distance and near correction.

How It Works
A bifocal lens has two separate zones, so you choose the prescription by changing where you look through the lens.
Upper area for distance
Look through the main part of the lens to see far away.
Lower segment for near
Look down into the smaller segment to read or do close work.
Move your eyes to switch
The change between zones is distinct, rather than gradual.
